An Incredible and Stress-Free Day Trip to Berat!

We are a couple in our early 40s from Finland. During our stay in Durrës, we happened to spot an advertisement on the promenade offering guided car trips to various destinations in Albania. Although we had rented our own car for the holiday, driving in Albania turned out to be highly stressful. The chaotic traffic, difficult parking, and constant worry about rental car damage meant we were on the verge of skipping several beautiful landmarks.

We decided to get in touch via WhatsApp using the number on the flyer. Our guide, Alban, replied almost instantly, and we were able to arrange a private trip to Berat for the very next day. Berat is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its rare Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. Famously known as the "City of a Thousand Windows," it is absolutely a must-see!

The price was €66 per person (or €75 for a fully private tour). In my opinion, this is extremely competitive for an 8-hour excursion. The price included round-trip transport from Durrës to Berat (approx. 180 km in total) and a guide who spoke flawless English, German, French, and Spanish, possessed a deep knowledge of the history, and was happy to answer any questions about Albanian culture, language, and society. Renting a car and paying for fuel (which costs as much as it does in Finland) would have been more expensive on our own, let alone the added stress of navigating local traffic and worrying about scratches in parking lots.

Alban drove incredibly calmly and safely, allowing us to fully relax and enjoy the scenery. He is an open, warm, and highly attentive guide who went out of his way to accommodate all our needs and preferences.

Navigating Albania can sometimes be challenging due to the language barrier, so having a local guide who knows the people and the language was incredibly helpful. In Berat, we walked through the picturesque historic streets while Alban shared the fascinating history and architecture. He also guided us to the best photo spots and proactively took great photos and videos of us.

We made the mistake of visiting during the hottest part of the day. If possible, we highly recommend taking this trip in the late afternoon or evening when it is cooler. However, Alban accommodated this perfectly: we took frequent breaks in the shade, cooled down with ice cream in an air-conditioned cafe, and drove up to the fortress rather than walking.

We had lunch inside the fortress at a very cozy restaurant. The meal cost around €15–20 per person, as advertised. Alban advised us not to order directly from the standard menu; instead, he asked about our dietary preferences and curated a traditional meal directly with the restaurant owner, whom he knew well. As a vegetarian, finding suitable local options can sometimes be difficult, but Alban arranged a fantastic, fresh vegetarian spread. We also enjoyed an excellent bottle of local red wine (around €20), which was a highlight of the meal.

After lunch, we explored the Berat Castle. Thanks to Alban’s local connections, he drove us all the way up to the castle gates, saving us a steep walk in the scorching heat. He also called a local contact who opened a beautiful, historic small church just for us for a private tour. The church was breathtaking, featuring stunning frescoes painted by a local master centuries ago.

We finished the tour at the top of the fortress with a stop at the "Dumdum" beer wagon. It was a hilarious and delightful surprise when the owner started playing Finnish pop music while we enjoyed some of the best craft beers of our trip.

The trip was an absolute 10/10 (5/5+) experience and worth every cent. We were so impressed by Alban’s professionalism and warm personality that we immediately booked a second trip with him to Vlorë and Sazan Island. I wanted to write this review in both Finnish and English because Alban mentioned that they rarely host Finnish guests—which is a shame, as many are missing out on these incredible sights. If you want a stress-free, deeply cultural, and fun experience, look no further!

Upea ja vaivaton päiväretki Beratiin!

Olemme noin 40-vuotias pariskunta Suomesta ja löysimme lomaillessamme Durrësin rantakadulta mainoksen, jossa tarjottiin autoreissuja Albanian eri kohteisiin. Olimme vuokranneet matkaa varten oman auton, mutta ajaminen Albaniassa osoittautui stressaavaksi: vilkas ja arvaamaton liikennekulttuuri, pysäköintipaikkojen etsiminen ja vuokra-auton naarmuuntumisesta murehtiminen veivät voimia siinä määrin, että useat upeat kohteet olivat jäädä meiltä kokonaan näkemättä.

Otimme yhteyttä mainoksessa olleeseen numeroon WhatsAppilla. Opas nimeltä Alban vastasi lähes välittömästi, ja saimme sovittua yksityisen päiväretken jo seuraavalle päivälle Beratiin. Berat on Unescon maailmanperintökohde, joka tunnetaan erityisesti ainutlaatuisesta Bysantin ja ottomaanien aikaisesta arkkitehtuuristaan sekä nimestään "tuhansien ikkunoiden kaupunkina". Se on ehdottomasti näkemisen arvoinen paikka!

Retken hinta oli 66 €/henkilö (yksityisenä reissuna 75 €/henkilö), mikä on erittäin kilpailukykyinen hinta noin kahdeksan tunnin kokonaisuudesta. Hintaan sisältyi edestakainen automatka Durrësista Beratiin (yhteensä noin 180 km) sekä täydellistä englantia, saksaa, ranskaa ja espanjaa puhuvan oppaan palvelut. Alban tuntee alueen historian perinpohjaisesti ja vastasi mielellään kaikkiin kysymyksiimme Albanian kulttuurista, kielestä ja arjesta. Pelkät autovuokrat ja polttoaineet (joka maksaa Albaniassa saman verran kuin Suomessa) olisivat omatoimisesti tulleet kalliimmiksi, puhumattakaan liikenteen aiheuttamasta stressistä.

Alban ajoi koko matkan rauhallisesti ja turvallisesti, joten saimme keskittyä maisemista nauttimiseen. Hän on avoin, lämmin ja huomaavainen persoona, joka ottaa asiakkaiden toiveet joustavasti huomioon ja varmistaa, että matkustajilla on hyvä olla.

Paikallisen oppaan mukanaolo helpotti matkantekoa merkittävästi, sillä asiointi Albaniassa ilman kielitaitoa on toisinaan haastavaa. Beratissa kävelimme Albanin kanssa pitkin kauniita vanhoja katuja ja kuulimme kiinnostavia tarinoita kaupungin historiasta. Hän näytti meille parhaat kuvauspaikat ja otti meistä pyytämättä upeita valokuvia ja videoita.

Teimme sen virheen, että vierailimme kaupungissa keskellä päivää, jolloin helle oli uuvuttava. Suosittelemmekin tekemään reissun mahdollisuuksien mukaan myöhemmin iltapäivällä tai illalla, kun on viileämpää. Alban otti kuitenkin kuumuuden hyvin huomioon: pidimme taukoja varjossa, vilvoittelimme jäätelöllä ilmastoidussa kahvilassa ja siirryimme autolla ylös linnoitusalueelle.

Lounastimme linnoituksen sisällä erittäin viihtyisässä ravintolassa. Ruoan hinta oli esitteen mukaisesti noin 15–20 €/henkilö. Alban suositteli, ettemme tilaisi suoraan ruokalistalta, vaan tiedusteli ruokavalioitamme ja järjesti meille upean aterian tuntemaltaan ravintoloitsijalta. Koska olen kasvissyöjä, Alban varmisti, että sain erinomaista ja paikallista kasvisruokaa. Nautimme lounaan ohella loistavaa paikallista punaviiniä (noin 20 €/pullo).

Ruokailun jälkeen tutustuimme Beratin linnoitukseen. Albanin suhteiden ansiosta pääsimme autolla ylös asti, joten säästyimme pitkältä nousulta polttavassa helteessä. Hän soitti paikalliselle tuttujensa verkostolle, ja pääsimme yksityiskierrokselle upeaan pieneen kirkkoon, jonka vuosisatoja vanhat freskot olivat kauniita. Kierroksen päätteeksi pysähdyimme linnoituksen huipulla Dumdum-olutvaunulla. Oli hauska yllätys, kun myyjä laittoi soimaan suomalaista iskelmää ja saimme nauttia Albanian parhaat pienpanimo-oluet upeissa maisemissa.

Kokonaisuutena reissu oli täydellinen 5/5+ kokemus ja jokaisen euron arvoinen. Olimme niin vakuuttuneita Albanin ammattitaidosta ja lämpimästä persoonasta, että varasimme heti perään toisen retken Vlorëen ja Sazanin saarelle. Haluan kirjoittaa tämän arvion suomeksi, sillä Albanin mukaan suomalaisia matkailijoita käy näillä retkillä vielä harmillisen vähän. Älkää jättäkö näitä upeita kohteita näkemättä! Albanin kyydissä matkanteko on huoletonta ja saatte enemmän irti kuin itse käymällä!

THIS WAS SO SO WORTH THE MONEY! We booked a tour to lake Bovilla and to climb the gambi mountain, our tour guide was Altin. He was so lovely and he picked us up from our hotel which is so much better than getting in the big coaches. It felt like going on a trip with a friend.
He told us so much history of albania and he was so accommodating.

Alban est un excellent guide qui parle plusieurs langues. Il nous a fait découvrir un magnifique pays. Nous avons fait la visite guidée de Tirana, et une excursion à Vlora ( just wouah). Alban nous a mis des paillettes dans les yeux, nous sommes déjà en train de prévoir un nouveau séjour avec plus de visites et notre fille.

Die Tour zum Lake Bovilla war einzigartig. Alban hat uns alles gezeigt und wir haben alles gesehen. Die Fahrt mit ihm ist nur zu empfehlen.

Danach waren wir zusammen mit Alban essen. Hier haben wir traditionelles albanisches Essen gegessen, was wir ohne Alban nie bestellt hätten. Es war überragend.

Eine rundum gelungene Tour! Wir wurden pünktlich in Durrës abgeholt und haben unseren Ausflug nach Tirana gestartet. Dort zeigte uns unser Guide die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten und ergänzte alles mit spannenden geschichtlichen Wissen. Besonders positiv war, dass er sehr freundlich, humorvoll und deutschsprachlich war – dadurch war die gesamte Tour sehr angenehm und unterhaltsam. Anschließend ging es weiter nach Berat, eine wunderschöne Stadt mit beeindruckender Burg, traumhafter Aussicht und sehr gastfreundlichen Einheimischen. Auch das Essen vor Ort war hervorragend. Unser Guide hat uns einen unvergesslichen schönen Tag bereitet. Wir würden ihn jederzeit wieder buchen und können diese Tour uneingeschränkt weiterempfehlen!

Meine Tochter und Ich, waren für eine Woche zu Gast in Durres. Durch einen guten Kontakt im Hotel, konnten wir einen weiteren Kontakt zu "Albania Daily Car Tours" und unserem Tourguide "Alban"herstellen.
Zwei Tage hat uns Alban durch die wundervollen Städte Albanien's gefahren und viele schöne Sehenswürdigkeiten gezeigt. Angefangen von Tirana, über Bovilla Lake und Kruja.

Recently, I had a great experience with Mr. Alban who helped us to drop off to airport from Durres. He seems really friendly guy with lots of info about tourism in Albania. I would recommend him if anyone wants to visit Albania and needs guided support.

Alban ist zuverlässig, pünktlich und sehr sehr nett. Er kann sehr gut deutsch und weiß viel über Land und Leute. Wir haben uns gleich am Flughafentransfer sehr wohl bei ihm gefühlt und prompt einen Ausflug bei ihm gebucht. Er fährt sehr gut Auto und das Auto ist sauber und sehr gepflegt. Den nächsten Besuch machen wir auf jeden Fall wieder mit ihm.

Was looking to tour a nice place in Albania. Booked with this company. Alban responded immediately with options and prices. I heard much about Berat , but was skeptical as to whether I would enjoy it. As a prolific traveler, you never know what to really expect and if you are wasting time in a tourist trap. I went in with low expectations. Alban was good with staying in touch, and picked me up on time. He's a good driver and very knowledgeable. It's obvious he loves his job and his country . I was immediately impressed by Berat and had a great time. Not only because the town is so beautiful, but because Alban knew exactly when to speak and when to give me space. We enjoyed an amazing lunch and saw plenty of interesting landmarks throughout the day. The price of the tour was quite reasonable and I would highly suggest you utilize their services if you plan to tour Albania , particularly Berat. Worth every Euro and all good things to say about this experience...
